Virginia’s #1 Provider
Richmond, VA, Nov. 16, 2010 - The Center for Surgical Innovation at Henrico Doctors’ Hospital hit an historic milestone today by completing the 2,000th operation using the daVinci® Robotic System. The procedure was performed by Dr. Danny Shaban at 11:30 am.
Henrico Doctors’ Hospital was the first hospital in the United States to perform general surgery using the daVinci Robotic system ten years ago. The computer-assisted surgical device was approved on Tuesday, July 11, 2000, by the United States Food and Drug Administration and Dr. William Kelley performed the first operation the next day.
As predicted ten years ago, the daVinci Robotic system has revolutionized surgery. Through a minimally invasive approach and greater precision, our surgeons are able to provide patients with less pain and a quicker recovery.
“We are proud to be Virginia’s leading provider of robotic surgery” said Patrick Farrell, CEO. “We have the top surgeons who are experts in their fields at Henrico Doctors’ Hospital. They provide patients with advanced clinical care right here at a community hospital.”
Studies suggest that patients significantly increase their chances of survival by selecting surgeons who perform the operations frequently or by selecting centers with higher volumes. The data suggests that highly specialized, high volume hospitals consistently record better outcomes.
